PRESERVE & PROTECT

Preservation in action

Since 1960, Historic Madison has helped protect the buildings and stories of Madison’s National Historic Landmark District.

Restoration

Judge Jeremiah Sullivan House

A major restoration of the c. 1820 house, focused on historic character, accessibility and interpretation.

The Judge Jeremiah Sullivan House, built about 1820, is closed to public tours through 2026. Jeremiah Sullivan (1794–1870) came to Madison in 1816, served as a state legislator and a justice of the Indiana Supreme Court, and is credited on HMI’s property page with suggesting the name Indianapolis.

Beyond one house

HMI also advises owners, supports the local historic-district review process, and stewards its own sites. The Shrewsbury–Windle House received the 2019 Cook Cup for outstanding restoration.
