Programs and interpretation
Historic Madison teaches through guided tours, school visits, and programs at its properties. Grade-by-grade prices and durations are confirmed with the office.
School programs
HMI offers school programs at its sites and can shape a visit around a grade or a focus. The Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum and the Shrewsbury–Windle House are two of the most visited school sites. A regular fourth-grade tour is described as meeting Indiana standards on nineteenth-century industry, immigration, and transportation.
Group tours
Groups of eight or more should contact the office before visiting. Private tours need 72 hours’ notice. Call (812) 265-2967 or write hmi@historicmadisoninc.com.
Walking tours
Free architectural walking tours are published on the events calendar when HMI schedules them.
Archicamp
HMI describes Archicamp as a program that teaches children about preservation. The 2025 session is noted on the Educate and Connect page. Ask the office about dates and enrollment for a future session.
A Madison tour online
HMI also points visitors to a Madison tour on Discover Indiana, “Madison: The Heart of the American Story,” made with IUPUI, Indiana’s Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, and the Indiana Historical Society.
